Mesut Ozil, former German professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder officially announced his retirement from professional football. The attacking midfielder announced his immediate retirement in writings through his timeline.
"I've had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity. But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it's become more and more clear that it's time to leave the big stage of football." Ozil wrote.
He played for Westfalia 04 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany where he was born in 1988.The attacking midfielder continued playing for several youth teams before his debut as a senior player at Schalke O4 and made 30 appearances.
Ozil left Schalke O4 for Werder Bremen and featured 71 times scoring 13 goals. He is also applauded and remembered for scoring a winner in the 2009 German Cup Final to give Werder Bremen their sixth German Cup as well as playing a key role that took Bremen to the UEFA Cup Final.
In 2010, Real Madrid announced to have bought the attacking midfielder at €15 million and the player considered it as an easy move as he assured that no professional football player would say NO to a club as CF Real Madrid. His style of play was comparable to Zidane, the French professional footballer who once played and coached at Real Madrid.
In September 2013, Ozil moved to Arsenal for €42.5 million, a record for a German player. The player was welcomed at Arsenal by three other fellow German teammates that included; Per Mertsacker, Thomas Eisfeld and Lukas Podolski.
