Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Tuesday that a Zambian student who died in Ukraine had been fighting for his Wagner Private Military Group.
In a statement, the businessman claimed that Nathan Lemekhandi Nyirenda, who was serving a 9.5 year prison sentence, agreed to be recruited as an act of gratitude for “Russia helping Africans to gain independence.”
Prigozhin added that Nyirenda had "died a hero".
Lemehani Nathan Nyirenda was studying nuclear engineering at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI). In April 2020, he received 9.5 years in a Russian colony, the Zambian Foreign Minister said, without specifying what crime Nyirenda was convicted of.
On September 22, the student died in the military zone in Ukraine, but it was not clear how he ended up there His body was taken to Rostov, and the government of Zambia demanded Russian authorities to procvide with information about the circumstances under which the Zambian citizen died.
