Lithuanian Education Minister Jurgita Siugzdiniene said that schools will gradually abandon teaching Russian because it is “not normal” that most pupils still want to study it, while blaming parents for putting the wrong thoughts into their children.
“We are consulting with neighboring Poland and Estonia. This will definitely be a gradual process and the main goal is to give students as many choices as possible,” the official said.
“We take a very serious view of [retraining] the current Russian language teachers if the choice of the Russian language decreases, and I think it will decrease because it is certainly not completely normal that about 70% of Lithuanian children learn it,“ the minister added.
