Dark Secrets about the Uganda Martyrs | Unveiling the Truth: The Hidden History of the Uganda Martyrs and the Tarnishing of Buganda's Legacy

Queen Elizabeth and the forgotten Crimes against Uganda and Baganda

It is with a heavy heart that I pen this article, driven by sorrow and emotion. If I don’t tell this story, who will? Our local media often ignores these dark chapters of history, so it is up to those of us who know the truth to share it with the world.

Before delving into the specific terrors associated with Queen Elizabeth II, we must start at the beginning: the era of colonial rule. The history taught in our schools, often written by the British, is rife with propaganda, censorship, and misinformation. If we do not correct this narrative, our grandchildren will continue to learn a distorted version of our past. Just as the mainstream media spreads propaganda about current global events, so too did they shape the story of our ancestors when literacy was a privilege few of them had.

PROTECTORATE OF UGANDA-How British used propaganda to rule and terrorize natives

Uganda became a British protectorate in 1892. At that time, Kabaka Mwanga II ruled Buganda, while Queen Alexandrina Victoria reigned over the British Empire. The British missionaries, with their Bible preachings, slowly weakened the influence of Buganda's traditional gods, aided by the concurrent rise of Islamic culture.

Kabaka Mwanga II was dismayed as his people began abandoning their traditional beliefs for Christianity and Islam. This religious shift was marked by the construction of numerous churches and mosques, overshadowing the places of worship for the Balubaale. Mwanga’s opposition to these foreign religions is well-documented, yet the history we are taught glosses over the complexities of this resistance.

The narrative of the Ugandan Martyrs, for instance, is often simplified. It is said that Mwanga ordered their execution by fire, a method alien to Buganda’s traditions but reminiscent of Western practices of burning witches. The British further smeared Mwanga’s name by spreading rumors of his homosexuality, claiming this was the reason behind the executions. This allegation, unsupported by evidence, has tarnished his legacy, reflecting the British strategy of using sexual slander to discredit opponents.

Kabaka Mwanga II, alongside Omukama Kabalega of Bunyoro, was eventually captured and exiled by the British. The official records claim that Mwanga died from illness due to poor weather conditions in exile, but many believe he was poisoned. This suspicion arises from the fact that the British viewed him as a significant threat.

Ssekabaka Daudi Chwa, crowned at a young age, initially cooperated with the British, signing the 1900 Buganda Agreement that transferred significant power to the British. However, as he grew older and more assertive, he too fell out of favor. His death at a young age from a supposed cardiac arrest is widely suspected to be another case of poisoning, a common fate for those who defied British rule.

The history of British colonialism in Uganda is not just about political control; it is also about cultural and psychological manipulation. The British used religion, propaganda, and outright lies to destabilize and control the local population. They spread misinformation about our leaders, destroyed our traditional beliefs, and reshaped our society to fit their imperial interests.

The mainstream media, both then and now, often presents a sanitized version of colonial history, focusing on supposed benefits while ignoring the profound suffering and injustice inflicted on the native populations. This biased narrative continues to shape how the world views colonialism, overshadowing the atrocities committed and the lasting trauma left in its wake.
