After a period of being unwell, the long serving governor of Bank of Uganda passed away at 5:30AM in this morning of 23rd January 22, 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya where he had been receiving medical attention in the previous days as it was confirmed by the Deputy Governor Michel Atingi-Ego.

It was said that he was admitted to the hospital on 31st December 2021 after he collapsed due to complications related to diabetes.
The late Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile has been serving as the governor of the Bank of Uganda since 1st January 2001 and was re-appointed for the second five-year term on 1st January 2006. He was again re-appointed for the third term in November 2010, effective 12th January 2011. In December 2015, for the fourth time he was again re-appointed for the same role effective 12th January 2016.
